Prior to taking up law at Leyden University, Michiel spent a year in North Carolina, U.S.A., to study English.

During his studies in Leyden he spent six months studying international criminal law in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and worked as a paralegal for three months with a Cape Town law firm.
